Air conditioning is the process of removing heat from indoor atmosphere rendering thermal comfort. The term can also refer to cooling, ventilation, heating and disinfection. It modifies the quality of air. An air conditioner is an appliance that is designed to soothe temperature and humidity of an area.

Air conditioner conditioning technicians classify conditioners into two broad categories:

Comfort applications

These applications provide an environment that remains relatively stable within a range that is comfortable for humans, irrespective of the changes that occur in the weather. Air conditioning helps in designing deep plan buildings. Had there been no air conditioners, buildings would have to be built narrower, or with light wells to help the inner spaces avail required amount of natural air. Tall buildings require proper ventilation. As wind speed increases considerably with increase in altitude, air conditioners play an important role in making up for the need of air. These type of applications are ideal for buildings like low rise residential complexes, high rise residential buildings, institutional buildings, industrial complexes, stadiums and commercial buildings.

Process applications

These types of applications provide a proper environment to perform a process, regardless of internal humidity and heat loads and weather conditions. The requirements of the process decide the resultant condition. Most of the time, the condition is comfortable for human beings. Process applications include places like operation theaters at hospitals, clean rooms for pharmaceuticals items, circuits, etc, spaces that are used for laboratory animal breeding, aircrafts, textile factories, data centers, mines, food processing areas, and biological laboratories.

The objective of comfort and process applications is not only to control the temperature, but also to improve parameters like air-quality and humidity levels. All types of air conditioning devices employ the same concept to keep things cool. The three main parts of a conditioning device are the compressor, evaporator and the condenser. A refrigerant helps in generating the cool air. Usually Freon is used. The compressor coerces and heats the refrigerant and makes it a liquid by running it through the hot coils. This liquid thereafter, runs through the expansion valve and leads to cooling of the Freon gas.

Air conditioners are an invincible part of our lives. The world would be a hot place without them. They help in driving away humidity and maintaining a healthy environment through the process of air conditioning.
